Tinnitus
Tinnitus is the sensation of noises in the head and/or ears which have no external source. About 1 in 3 people will experience tinnitus at some point in their lives.
Accurate assessment of tinnitus.
We receive referrals for patients whose major complaint is tinnitus, which may ‘stand-alone’ as a symptom or which is often associated with hearing impairment. It may also be associated with other medical conditions which require medical, surgical or clinical management such as acoustic neuroma.
The accurate assessment of the nature of the tinnitus is important to ensure that underlying conditions are identified, and appropriate treatment to help the individual manage their tinnitus is initiated.
Treatments for tinnitus.
Treatment may include hearing aids, cognitive approaches to therapy, advice on management, and/or noise making devices which counteract the internal noise of the tinnitus. Many patients with tinnitus can suffer from concurrent psychological distress which may require appropriate health professional input. They may also complain of sleep disturbance and problems with concentration.
